Did You Know . . .

.....that you can record a message and send it via email? To do this click on Start, then Programs, then Accessories, then Entertainment, then Sound Recorder. Whew. Now you should be at the Sound Recorder dialog box. Click the red button on the right side of the bottom and start your recording [of course, you must have a microphone in order for this to work]. You can usually record about a minute easily. Sing Happy Birthday to your grandchild; wish your loved one a Happy Anniversary; tell someone Thank You . . . well, you get the message [pun intended], eh what? Now just save it as a wav file and attach it to your email. The recipient can open the file and hear your musical [?] tones or just the lovely sound of your voice. Thanks to Bob Schaffer for this tip.

.....that last month’s tip re copying text from a PDF file gave a non-member a problem? He wrote and asked for better directions. Turns out the directions do work—IF the creator of the file did not disable text selection in his Security Options. If you attempt to copy the text and find the Text selection button grayed out, you will not be able to copy. D. W. also sent along this link www.pdfzone.com/resources/tips_techniques which has some interesting tips. One of which follows.

.....that you can copy an entire multi-page PDF document in one click of the button? Make sure your Acrobat Reader is set to Continuous or Continuous-Facing Layouts. Now when you Select All under the Edit menu all the pages will be selected and can be copied in one fell swoop.

.....that former columnist Kay has made a discovery she wants to share? Do you ever get frustrated by having to type 29 cents instead of being able to use the ¢ symbol? How about wanting to put a trademark ™ or copyright © symbol into your writing. Well, unless you use WordPerfect you might think there is no way to do this. Kay found a simple method by using the ALT key and numeral keyboard combinations to get the symbol she wants. A list of these, in chart form is available at http://members.aol.com/MonT714/tutorial/ALTchrc.html. There are also symbols for making factions, which is extremely useful. ALT 171 with give you ½; ALT 172 is ¼; and ALT 0190 is ¾. Check out the web site for complete directions.

.....that if you use WordPerfect you can do the special symbols and then some? When you want to insert a symbol or fraction simply click CTRL+W. A dialog box will pop up showing several lists of icons, symbols, etc. There are 15 categories with ASCII being the first. The icon we use at the end of an article [*] is from the Iconic symbol list and is obtained by entering 5,118 in that list.

.....that CDs left in the sunshine will degrade within 2 hours?
